How HealthPrize enabled people on dialysis to better manage their phosphorus levels through engagement and education
Many foods contain the mineral phosphorus. We need a certain amount to stay healthy. But too much phosphorus can be detrimental to our overall health. While normal working kidneys can remove excess phosphorus from the blood, the kidneys of people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not as effective at maintaining phosphorus homeostasis.
In 2019, HealthPrize launched a patient engagement program for our client, the manufacturer of a therapeutic that, together with dialysis and dietary management, may help people on dialysis remove excess dietary phosphorus from their bodies.
The program’s educational content targets important issues to help patients become self-empowered and aware of topics relevant to their health status. Educational content is delivered sequentially to patients using quizzes, surveys, and daily tips to repetitively and interactively reinforce key learning messages. Topics included:
Definition of kidney disease, its treatments, and measurements used in patient care
Why diet and renal dietitians’ support are key to improved outcomes
Strategies to incorporate exercise into daily life in order to support a healthy lifestyle
Guidance regarding our client’s medication, such as how the medication works and when to take it
In HealthPrize programs for pharmaceutical manufacturers, patients verified to be prescribed a certain therapeutic engage daily with educational content and behavioral triggers that support improved medication adherence. Members receive daily prompts via text message or email to report their medication taking. They earn points for various engagement activities, including daily check-ins, reading daily tips, and engaging in weekly disease- and medication-specific quizzes and surveys.
Program members with a monthly verified prescription can redeem accumulated points for items such as e-gift cards from select retailers or specified health-related products. This program offered e-gift cards.
All prescription fills are verified through HealthPrize’s proprietary verification system.

Healthcare professionals provide essential, ongoing support and care for people on dialysis prescribed our client’s medication. Results from the program’s first year establish that it can be a bridge between a patient’s in-person appointments, offering daily support and encouragement through a highly engaging educational experience. Patients learn about their disease and ways to improve their health, while engaging with the program’s gamified elements, supporting healthy behaviors and improving adherence and refill rates.
A HealthPrize program can be a valuable complement to clinical care in the ongoing support of improved health outcomes.
