After a 12-month enrollment in a HealthPrize program, 83% of diabetes patients shifted from non-adherent to adherent to their prescribed medication
NORWALK, CONN. – May 2, 2023 – HealthPrize, a digital health pioneer in the use of behavioral economics, education, and gamification to inspire health behavior change, today announced that the Validation Institute, a professional community that advocates for organizations and approaches that deliver better health, affirmed that HealthPrize closes gaps in medication adherence for people with chronic diseases.
HealthPrize programs engage people taking medications for chronic conditions every day with educational content, health activities, and behavioral triggers to help them develop the habits and health literacy needed to more effectively manage their care.
The Validation Institution analyzed nearly 400 members of a HealthPrize program for people prescribed a daily diabetes medication with a history of non-adherence over the six months prior to program enrollment. After 12 month’s enrollment in HealthPrize, 83% of this previously non-adherent cohort was confirmed adherent to their medication, having reached or exceeded 80% proportion of days covered (PDC).
Reaching 80% or greater PDC is considered adherent to treatment based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines for the measurement of adherence to diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia medications for Medicare Stars ratings.
“HealthPrize is designed to motivate and support healthy member behaviors that ultimately achieve better health outcomes and lower medical expenses,” said John Ragland, chief strategy officer and co-founder, HealthPrize. “This affirmation is positive external validation that HealthPrize programs make a significant difference for any payers looking for digital, scalable interventions that help to close gaps in medication adherence.”
The HealthPrize platform delivers brief educational tips, short quizzes, and targeted content through a gamified experience, helping members to manage their condition with confidence and ease, which can be an otherwise daunting task. The platform delivers personalized daily touchpoints with the member, requiring no human intervention.
In addition to improved adherence, recently published data analyzing patient engagement levels showed that HealthPrize members who are 65 years or older have the highest engagement levels and spend the longest increments of time across all HealthPrize programs. Health plans, especially Medicare Advantage plans, looking for a proven solution for older patient populations have that with HealthPrize programs, which address challenges both payers and members face today.
